Kolkata Centre for Creativity presents Interwoven: Tapestries and Drawings by S.G. Vasudev from late 1970s to 2022

Kolkata: Kolkata Centre for Creativity is all set for a one-month art exhibition, ‘Interwoven’ by S.G.Vasudev, curated by Nalini S Malaviya. KCC, which has been a diverse and inclusive organization, which promotes excellence in contemporary art and creates opportunities for young and emerging artists through a robust arts calendar, has collaborated with SG Vasudev who is regarded as an institution in India and this is the first time that his works will be exhibited in Kolkata.

Interwoven presents selected artworks of the Bangalore-based veteran artist. Vasudev has experimented with various media throughout his 50 years long artistic career and is known for his versatility. A selection of 15 tapestries and 20 drawings will be on display on the first-floor gallery of the Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC) from 25 February. The exhibition will run through various events till 25 March, 2023.

In this exhibition, the focus remains on select tapestries, created over almost the last three decades, and drawings, from his early period to those that are recent and being exhibited for the first time.

About S G Vasudev: Born in Mysore in 1941, S G Vasudev received recognition as a painter early in his career. He was awarded a National Scholarship by the Government of India in 1964 and a National Award from the All-India Lalit Kala Akademi in 1967. He’s a founder-member of the Cholamandal Artists’ Village on the outskirts of Chennai where he lived and worked till 1988. He currently lives and works in Bangalore.

Vasudev works in various mediums (drawings, paintings, reliefs in copper and tapestries in silk). He became well-known for his ‘Vriksha’ (Tree of Life) series, which evolved over nearly a decade, turning into the Tree of Life and Death in the latter half of the 1980s. He also explored the theme of ‘Maithuna’ (Act of Love) through a series of drawings, paintings and copper reliefs.

Vasudev has participated in several exhibitions in India and abroad, including the Triennale India, Paris Biennale, Havana Biennale, India’s National Gallery of Modern Art show in Washington, Festival of India in Tokyo and New South- Contemporary Paintings & Sculpture from South India in London. He has held solo exhibitions in different parts of India and the world, including the USA, UK and Germany. His works are represented in many individual, institutional and corporate collections in India and overseas.
Vasudev has won recognition in the form of prestigious awards from the National Academy of Art, and the State Academies of Art in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. He has also been on the Executive Board of the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi and worked as a selection committee member twice for the National Exhibition of Art.

Nalini S Malaviya is a Bangalore-based art consultant, curator and writer. She has been writing for the media since 2003 and has been an art columnist for leading newspapers. Malaviya has contributed to the Financial Times, Times of India, Bangalore Mirror, Deccan Herald, several art magazines and artist books, among other publications.

Nalini is the Founder/Publisher of Art Scene India (www.artsceneindia.com) which was established in 2006 as a blog, and has evolved into a significant resource site and a digital archive with extensive documentation of the Indian art scene over the last 15 years. Some of her curatorial projects include ‘Enchanted Breath’, ‘Convergence,’ ‘Bend’, ‘Parallax of Visual Memories’, ‘Reimagining: (Un)Reality and Space’, ‘Irreverent Gene’ and ‘Polynomials of Relevance’ with leading contemporary artists from across the country.

Her recent projects include a fundraising art exhibition and the launch of #arttrackwithNalini – a series of conversations on contemporary art. Nalini has a fortnightly art column in Sunday Herald and is currently the chairperson for All Bangalore Chapter for Fine Arts and President of Karnataka Arts Leadership Council, WICCI (Women’s Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry).

About Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC)

A unit of Anamika Kala Sangam Trust (AKST), Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC) is a multi-disciplinary interactive art and creativity Centre located in Kolkata, West Bengal. It is the first in Eastern India to make Art accessible to the visually impaired and differently-abled under their ‘Art for All’ initiative. Spearheaded by Richa Agarwal as its Chairperson, the 70,000 sq. ft. center has been the leading art and cultural landscape of contemporary India since November 2018.
